How to make cushions (easily)

I have never been 100% keen on sewing - only because I was told by a teacher as child that I was way too untidy! Imagine that! But truth be told, it isn’t about being neat - it’s about having patience and knowing how to make something that is making me enjoy sewing that little bit more these days.

Recently, I wanted to do a make-over in our main lounge and thought I should start with the cushions. Why buy new ones when I have lots of inners and some lovely fabric? This is how to make cushions easily.

What you’ll need:

• Fabric (start with 1m if you want to fiddle and this will probably cover 2-4 cushions depending on their size).
• Scissors
• Measuring tape
• Pins
• Music (yes, I said music - it calms me and is a requisite)

Process:

• Measure the width of fabric you’ll need to cover the width of the cushion, including extra space to cover the sides of the cushion.
• Cut off a length of fabric at the desired width. You will know how much fabric to use by taking one end and wrapping it over the cushion (think of it as if you’re making an envelope).
• Hem the fabric all around or if you’re lucky enough to have an over-locker (which I am not), over-lock the edges.
• Once you have edged/hemmed the fabric, lay it down flat (nice fabric side up) and place the cushion inner into the middle of the piece of fabric.
• Fold over the fabric now to overlap by at least 10cm. Place one pin on each side to keep the fabric together.
• Gently remove the cushion inner.
• Pin all the way on each side to keep the fabric together nicely as this is where you are now going to sew.
• Sew along the edges of the two sides.
• Now all that you have to do is turn the cover inside out.
• Voila - you have a lovely cushion cover with no zips required (which makes me very happy).
